About The Course

Course Outline


Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.


Prerequisite: None


 

Module 1 Overview: Foundations of Visual Arts

Guiding Question:What are the elements and principles of design and how do you apply them in your own artwork?


In this module, students will focus on the Elements & Principles of Design, Creative Process and Studio Skills to develop an understanding of the foundations of visual art. 


Module 2 Overview: Drawing Skills & Techniques

Guiding Question:Why is it important to practice drawing techniques when studying visual arts? 


In this module, students will explore different drawing techniques and practice using them to create artwork of their own. They will complete a series of sketchbook activities to hone their skills and apply them when creating their final portfolio assignment.


Module 3 Overview: Painting & Color

Guiding Question: How do we get the color right in paintings?


In this module, students will explore color and painting techniques and how to use them in their own work. They will also study Canadian art including indigenous symbolism in color and design. They will produce a landscape painting inspired by the group of seven.  


Module 4 Overview: Print Making & Mixed Media

Guiding Question:What is printmaking and how do artists use printmaking techniques to create art? 


In this module, students will explore printmaking and identify different types. They will experiment with mono-prints and texture rubbings using a variety of different materials. 


Module 5 Overview: Media Design & Digital Arts

Guiding Question:What is printmaking and how do artists use printmaking techniques to create art? 


In this module, students will explore graphic design and digital artwork through the use of digital platforms such as Canva and complete a series of activities to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts discussed within the module.They will research artists who create artwork using digital platforms and present their work via a video.  


Module 6 Overview: Art History, Criticism & Culminating Project

Guiding Question: Why do we analyze and critique artworks?


In this module, students will explore Canadian art movements and influences.
