About the Course

Course Outline


Students will apply the elements and principles of design when exploring the creative process. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on and interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context.


Prerequisite: None


 

Module 1 Overview: The Creative Process

Guiding Question:What is the creative process and how do you apply it in your own artwork?


In this module, students will be looking at the creative process, understanding how and why it is used in visual art. They will complete a series of sketchbook activities to help them understand the process and to enable them to use the creative process when creating artwork of their own. 


Module 2 Overview: Elements Of Design

Guiding Question:What are the 7 elements of design and how do I use them in creating my artwork?


In this module, students will explore the 7 elements of design, what they mean in relation to creating art works and how to implement them.


Module 3 Overview: Principles Of Design

Guiding Question:What are the principles of design and how do I use them in creating my artwork?


In this module, students will explore the 7 principles of design, what they mean in relation to creating art works and how, both the elements of design and the principles of design combined create an effect to help convey the artist’s intent. 


Module 4 Overview: Drawing Techniques

Guiding Question:Why is it important to practice drawing techniques when studying visual arts? 


In this module, students will explore different drawing techniques and practice using them to create artwork of their own. They will complete a series of sketchbook activities to hone their skills and apply them when creating their final portfolio piece assignment.  


Module 5 Overview: Colour Theory

Guiding Question:What is Colour Theory?


In this module, students will explore colour theory, what it means in relation to creating art works and how to use colour to convey a message, create impact and evoke a mood.   


Module 6 Overview: Symbolism In Indigenous Art

Guiding Question:How does culture influence art?


In this module, students will explore how different cultures identify themselves through art. Symbolism and its purpose in artwork, indigenous art, its history and relevance in the world today.

Course Work, Assignments, and Proctored Tests: 70%

Culminating Independent Study Project: 20%
